Overview

Situated in the trail-rich environment of Grand Junction, Colorado, the Gunny Loop offers 12 miles of rocky, single-track adventure for advanced mountain bikers. Contrary to its name, Gunny Loop is not actually a loop but rather a network of intensive ascents and descents. Here's everything you need to know if you plan to tackle this challenging trail.

Getting There

  • Location: From I-70 business loop, proceed to the intersection of 1st & Grand Ave. Follow signs pointing west toward Colorado National Monument. The trailhead parking lot is on the left, just before the monument's entrance.

The Trail Experience

Technical Yet Rewarding

Gunny Loop starts with an initial climb of about 300 feet, reaching the network's highest point before diving down around 800 feet. This ever-changing topography—consistently undulating up and down—is not for the faint-hearted or the inexperienced. Riders describe the trail as "intensively technical" but not extreme, labeling it as one of the finest mountain bike trails globally.

Integration with Other Trails

For those on a more extended circuit, particularly on the Lunch Loops, incorporating Gunny Loop is highly recommended. Riders suggest tackling it from south to north for the most rewarding experience. The trail can be done as a standalone venture or combined with nearby trails such as Gunnector and Ravens Ridge for a more exhaustive experience.

Seasonality and Precautions
