Nestled just a short ride from the iconic Moab town in Utah lies a trail that promises cyclists both an exhilarating challenge and a visual treat: the Amasa Back Trail.
Upon setting tires on the trail, one thing becomes immediately clear: this isn't a journey for the faint-hearted or the inexperienced. This route demands technical prowess, with its landscape predominantly dominated by sandstone and dotted with multiple small ledges. As one makes their way up, the trail offers a few surprises in the form of ledges larger than a foot, adding to the adrenaline rush. But, as challenging as the ascent might sound, it is very much rewarding. Expect captivating views of the Colorado River as it gracefully carves its path towards the southwest, a sight that becomes more stunning as you reach the cliff, towering a breathtaking 1000' above the river. The descent is equally thrilling, packed with corners, jumps, and drop-offs. But with the memory of the climb fresh in mind, navigating through the tricky patches becomes part of the fun.
Cyclists who've taken on the Amasa Back Trail have shared their mixed bag of emotions and experiences:
Starting from Center & Main in Moab, head south on Main St, then take a right onto Kane Creek Rd. Another option is to take the Mill Creek Bike Path to 500 West and turn left. Five miles down Kane Creek Rd, you'll find the Amasa Back parking, the second lot after the pavement concludes. The jeep trail begins less than a mile from there.
For those who embrace challenges, the Amasa Back Trail offers an unforgettable experience. Between the technical climbs, the sweeping views of Moab's landscapes, and the heart-pounding descent, it promises a cycling adventure like no other. But a word to the wise: come prepared, both in terms of skill and equipment. This trail, as beautiful as it is, doesn't pull any punches.
