The Red Mountain Park Trail: A Quick City Getaway for the Intermediate Biker

Overview

Nestled in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama, the Red Mountain Park Trail offers a speedy escape into nature for local cyclists. Built by the Friends of Red Mountain, the trail covers a distance of 4 miles and is recommended for intermediate level riders. Although not as extensive or versatile as the more famed Oak Mountain trails in the area, Red Mountain has its unique quirks that make it a noteworthy ride.

How to Get There

To get to the starting point:

  • From Hwy 280 in Birmingham: Take Lakeshore Parkway (Hwy 149) west towards I-65.
  • After I-65: Continue down over West Oxmoore Rd and take the 3rd street (Frankfurt Cir) to the right.
  • On Frankfurt Cir: Follow the street around to the left as it changes its name to Lyon Rd.
  • Parking: Park in the culdesac area before the road takes a sharp bend to the right.

Trail Composition

  • Outer Loop: Primarily old RR beds and roads; nothing particularly technical.
  • Inner Trails: Comprised of hiking trails, offering less flow and more challenging conditions for mountain bikes.
  • Direction: Best ridden counterclockwise.

What to Expect

Expect a mix of single-track and some double-track trails. The ride is relatively short but engaging, with an assortment of mild climbs and descents. Be mindful of hikers and trail runners, especially on weekends.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Quick Access: The trail is only about 15 minutes from downtown Birmingham.
  • Technical Variety: While the outer loop is beginner-friendly, the inner trails offer more advanced riders a good challenge.
  • Scenery: The area provides interesting historical and natural settings to enjoy during your ride.

Cons:

  • Limited Flow: Compared to Oak Mountain, the trails don't offer as much flow.
  • Maintenance: Stays muddy for a few days after rain, and is still under construction.

Riders' Recommendations

If you're an experienced cyclist looking for a quick ride, Red Mountain is worth a visit. But for a more diversified trail experience, Oak Mountain remains the go-to destination. Be sure to check for any construction or "No Trespassing" signs before heading out, as the trail may be closed for enhancements. For more information and latest updates, here's a link to the most recent trail map.
