Anacortes Community Forest Lands (ACFL) Bike Trail Review

Nestled in the scenic city of Anacortes, Washington, lies a gem for cycling enthusiasts. The Anacortes Community Forest Lands (ACFL) bike trail, surrounded by old forest and winding around a pristine lake, offers a memorable riding experience for bikers of varying levels.

Trail Features

  • Terrain: ACFL boasts a network of singletrack trails spread across a distance of 10 miles. The undulating terrain, dominated by intermediate-level trails, promises a combination of challenges and relaxation.
  • Scenery: The trail meanders through an old forest providing riders with serene views of the lake and lush greenery.
  • Trail Maintenance: Recent visitors commend the trail's upkeep. Overgrown bushes and shrubs have been trimmed back, ensuring a smooth ride.
  • Signage: While there are maps at a few main trailheads, it's recommended to pick up a map at the local bike shop (LBS). Trail intersections are well-marked with numbered signs, which, although not sequential, become logical after a few rides.
  • Respect Private Property: Portions of the trail border private property on the North and West. Some trails may cross these boundaries, so riders are urged to be respectful.

Getting There

ACFL is easily accessible with numerous entry points from small neighborhoods. However, public parking can be a constraint. Notable parking areas include:

  1. From Commercial Ave in Anacortes, turn west on 32nd St, leading to Heart Lake Rd. A large parking lot for Heart Lake is situated here, and several trails commence from this point. Directly across the main road, one can access the Whistle Lake area.
  2. Further down Heart Lake Rd, public parking is available on the left at the Mt Erie Rd intersection. From here, bikers can access both Whistle Lake and Heart Lake trails.

Rider Feedback

Feedback from the cycling community has been overwhelmingly positive:

  • Diverse Experience: While the trail is fun for beginners, seasoned riders too have challenges awaiting them.
  • Trail Features: Riders have appreciated the numerous turns, roots, and whoopsie whoodles which make the ride thrilling. However, a few pointed out that roots can be a challenge, and one particular switchback on trail 250 proved difficult for some.
  • Popularity: Though the trail has been appreciated by many, it isn’t overly crowded. This allows for a quieter, more enjoyable biking experience.
  • Advice: New riders should consider obtaining a map for clarity. For the more adventurous, entering across from Heart Lake and embarking on the partial hike-and-bike route leads to a rewarding downhill thrill.

Final Thoughts

ACFL's bike trail stands out not just for its scenic beauty, but also for the diverse riding experience it offers. Whether one is looking for a relaxed ride amidst nature or an adrenaline-pumping challenge, this trail in
